Frequently Asked Questions About Pond Services

Answers to the most common questions about pond maintenance, construction, memberships, seasonal care, and our guarantees.

Maintenance Questions

Per-visit pond maintenance in Delaware ranges from $150 to $400 depending on pond size and services needed. Maintenance memberships start at $200/month for Bronze (10 visits per season), $400/month for Gold (22 visits), and $750/month for Platinum (40+ visits). Most pond owners save 30-50% annually with a membership compared to per-visit pricing.

Most ponds benefit from a full cleanout once per year in early spring, before water temperatures exceed 55 degrees F. Between cleanouts, routine maintenance every 2-4 weeks keeps water quality stable and prevents emergency situations. Our Gold and Platinum memberships provide biweekly and weekly visits respectively.

Basic tasks like skimmer emptying and visual inspections are fine to do yourself. However, full cleanouts, filter system servicing, water chemistry management, and fish health issues benefit from professional expertise. DIY cleanouts risk fish stress, ecosystem disruption, and equipment damage. Professional maintenance ensures your biological filtration stays balanced and your fish stay healthy.

Yes. Koi ponds require more attention to water quality because koi are more sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and pH fluctuations than goldfish. Koi also produce significantly more waste, requiring larger filtration systems and more frequent filter cleaning. Feeding schedules must be adjusted seasonally, and koi health monitoring is an ongoing task. Read our full koi pond maintenance guide for details.

Construction Questions

A standard ecosystem pond typically takes 3-7 days from excavation to completion, depending on size and complexity. Larger projects with extensive stonework, multiple waterfall tiers, or natural swim pond features can take 2-4 weeks. Rock Water Ponds provides a detailed timeline during the design phase so you know exactly what to expect. Learn more about our construction process.

We build ecosystem ponds (with fish and plants), koi ponds (deeper, with advanced filtration), pondless waterfalls (water disappears into a hidden reservoir), natural streams, fountainscapes, and natural swim ponds engineered to commercial safety standards. Every project is custom-designed to fit your property, preferences, and budget.

Most residential pond installations in Delaware do not require a building permit, but there are exceptions. Properties in floodplains, wetland buffer zones, or HOA-governed communities may have restrictions. New Castle County and Chester County, PA have different requirements. Rock Water Ponds handles permit research during the design phase and advises you on any applicable regulations before construction begins.

Pond construction costs vary widely based on size, design, and features. A basic ecosystem pond starts around $8,000, while a large koi pond with waterfall, stream, and advanced filtration can exceed $30,000. Pondless waterfalls range from $5,000 to $15,000. We provide detailed written estimates during the design consultation so there are no surprises.

Membership Questions

All membership tiers include scheduled maintenance visits, spring cleanout, water quality testing, filter cleaning, fish health monitoring, and priority scheduling. Bronze provides 10 visits per season. Gold adds biweekly visits (22 total), equipment inspections, and minor repairs. Platinum includes 40+ visits, weekly service, emergency response, the ClearWater Guarantee, and a dedicated pond technician who knows your system.

Yes. You can upgrade your membership tier at any time during the season. The price difference is prorated for the remaining months. Downgrades take effect at the start of the next season. Many pond owners start with Bronze and upgrade to Gold or Platinum once they experience the difference consistent professional care makes.

Memberships can be cancelled with 30 days written notice. There are no long-term contracts or cancellation fees. We earn your continued business through results, not lock-in agreements. Most members renew year after year because the value is clear.

The active maintenance season in Delaware runs from March through October (approximately 8 months). Bronze visits are scheduled monthly, Gold visits biweekly, and Platinum visits weekly. Specific visit days are coordinated during onboarding. You do not need to be home for visits — we provide a written report after each service.

Seasonal Care Questions

Schedule your spring cleanout before water temperatures exceed 55 degrees F, which typically means mid-March through mid-April in Delaware. Cleaning before the biological cycle fully activates prevents ammonia spikes that stress fish. Book in January or February to secure your preferred date — spring is our busiest season.

Install fall netting before the first significant leaf drop, usually late September to early October in the Delaware Valley. The netting should remain in place until all deciduous trees have dropped their leaves, typically mid-to-late November. Removing leaves from the pond is far more labor-intensive than preventing them from entering in the first place.

Koi and goldfish survive Delaware winters by entering torpor (a dormant state) near the bottom of the pond where water stays above 32 degrees F. A floating de-icer or aerator maintains a gas exchange hole in the ice to prevent toxic gas buildup. Never break ice by hitting it. Our winter shutdown service prepares your pond, equipment, and fish for safe overwintering.

ClearWater Guarantee & Leak Questions

The ClearWater Guarantee is Rock Water Ponds' commitment to crystal clear water. We design and install a professional filtration system (bottom drain, external serviceable filter, and UV treatment) sized to your pond's exact volume. When paired with a Platinum Maintenance Membership, we guarantee your water stays clear. If it does not meet our clarity standards, we correct it at no additional charge.

The ClearWater Guarantee is available to pond owners who have a Rock Water Ponds-designed filtration system installed and maintain an active Platinum Maintenance Membership. The guarantee requires both professional filtration and consistent maintenance to ensure the conditions for clear water are always met. Existing ponds can qualify after a filtration assessment and upgrade if needed.

If your pond loses more than 1-2 inches of water per week in summer (normal evaporation), it may have a leak. Other signs include constantly running autofill systems, wet spots around the pond perimeter, and water levels that drop noticeably overnight. Our leak diagnostics service uses the proprietary Elite Diagnostic Method to locate any leak with a 100% guarantee — we have never failed to find a pond leak.

Rock Water Ponds guarantees we will find your leak. Our Elite Diagnostic Method systematically isolates every component of your pond system — basin, plumbing, waterfall, stream, and fittings — to pinpoint the exact location. If we cannot find it, you do not pay for the diagnostic. We have maintained a 100% success rate across every leak diagnostics job we have performed.
