Pond construction project in progress with excavation and boulder placement

Pond & Water Feature Construction in Delaware

Every project is collaborative. Every design unique. Every connection personal. Rock Water Ponds builds custom ecosystem ponds, pondless waterfalls, fountainscapes, and natural stone features that transform outdoor spaces into private retreats.

Water Features Designed for Your Lifestyle

Rock Water Ponds connects with you as an individual to understand how you use your home, then works to extend those characteristics outdoors. No two builds are the same.

Ecosystem pond with natural boulders, waterfall, and aquatic plants

Ecosystem Ponds

Self-sustaining water gardens that combine fish, plants, beneficial bacteria, and natural filtration into a balanced ecosystem. From intimate 6x8 ponds to expansive 20x30 installations, each ecosystem pond is designed to match your property's terrain, sun exposure, and aesthetic goals. Includes skimmer, biofalls, pump, liner, and biological filtration.

Pondless waterfall cascading over natural boulders

Pondless Waterfalls

All the beauty and sound of a waterfall without the maintenance demands of a pond. Water cascades over natural stone and disappears into a hidden underground reservoir. Ideal for front yards, smaller properties, or homeowners who want the relaxation of moving water without fish care responsibilities. Low-maintenance and safe for families with young children.

Fountainscape water feature with decorative stone and lighting

Fountainscapes

Decorative fountain features that work in any space, from courtyards to patios to formal garden settings. Water bubbles up through natural stone, disappearing into a concealed basin below. Compact, elegant, and virtually maintenance-free. Available in single-boulder, multi-stone, and custom configurations.

Natural stone patio with flagstone and boulder seating walls

Patio & Stone Work

Natural stone patios, walkways, and seating walls that complement and integrate with your water feature. We work with Pennsylvania blue stone, Beech mountain stone, imported Kasha stones, and custom boulder walls to create hardscape that feels organic to the landscape rather than imposed upon it.

Natural stream system with cascading pools and aquatic plantings

Stream Systems

Natural-looking streams that meander through your landscape, connecting water features and creating a sense of movement and depth. Streams can stand alone or connect a waterfall to a pond. We design stream beds with varying depths, pools, and riffles that support aquatic life and create diverse sound textures.

Natural swim pond with clear water and surrounding landscape

Natural Swim Ponds

Engineered water features that combine the beauty of a natural pond with commercial pool-equivalent safety standards. No harsh chemicals needed. Built with proper electrical bonding, grounding, and biological filtration. Learn more about our natural swim pond construction.

The Design-Build Process

From first conversation to final reveal, here's how a Rock Water Ponds project comes to life.

1

Consultation

We visit your property, listen to your vision, assess terrain and conditions, and discuss possibilities. This is where we learn how you live, how you use your outdoor space, and what "done right" looks like for your family. No two consultations produce the same design direction.

2

Design

Based on our conversation and site assessment, we develop a custom design that integrates with your property's natural features. You'll see the proposed layout, materials, plantings, and equipment before anything is built. Revisions are part of the process until the design feels right.

3

Construction

Construction begins with excavation and grading, followed by liner installation, boulder and stone placement, equipment installation, and plumbing. Our crew works methodically through each phase, hand-placing every stone for the most natural appearance. Most residential projects are completed in 3-10 days depending on scope.

4

Final Reveal

Water fills the feature for the first time. Aquatic plants go in. Fish are introduced. LED lighting is dialed in. We walk you through every component, how it works, and how to enjoy it. Then we hand you the keys to your new outdoor retreat.

Natural Stone & Materials Selection

The stone selection is what separates a professional water feature from a DIY project. Rock Water Ponds sources and hand-selects natural stone from regional quarries and specialty suppliers. Every boulder is chosen for shape, color, texture, and how it will weather over time.

We work with Pennsylvania blue stone for patios and coping, Beech mountain stone for waterfall faces and stream beds, imported Kasha stones for accent features, and native fieldstone for walls and borders. Boulder walls are built using techniques that create the appearance of naturally occurring rock formations, not stacked retaining walls.

Equipment is equally important. We install commercial-grade pumps, skimmers, and biofalls from industry-leading manufacturers. The ClearWater Guarantee is backed by properly sized filtration designed specifically for your pond's volume and bioload. We don't cut corners on equipment because equipment is what keeps your water feature performing year after year.

Pond Construction FAQ

Most residential pond and water feature projects take 3-10 days of active construction, depending on complexity and size. A simple pondless waterfall may be completed in 2-3 days. A large ecosystem pond with stream, waterfalls, and extensive stone work typically takes 7-10 days. Weather can affect scheduling, but we communicate proactively about any delays.

We build ecosystem ponds (fish ponds), koi ponds with advanced filtration, pondless waterfalls, fountainscapes, natural stream systems, natural swim ponds, and combination features that integrate multiple water elements. Every build is custom-designed for your property, budget, and lifestyle. There are no pre-fabricated kits or cookie-cutter installations.

Permit requirements vary by municipality and project scope. Most backyard ponds and water features in Delaware do not require a building permit unless they involve significant grading, electrical work (for lighting or pumps over certain amperage), or proximity to wetlands or property lines. We handle the research for your specific location and advise you on any permits needed before construction begins.

In Delaware, pond construction can happen from early spring through late fall. The ideal window is April through October when ground conditions are workable and temperatures support immediate biological activation. Spring builds give your ecosystem the full growing season to establish. Fall builds are excellent for hardscape-focused projects and allow the pond to settle in over winter for a strong spring startup.

Yes. Every new build is eligible for our Maintenance Membership Programs. We strongly recommend pairing your new water feature with a membership from day one. The team that built your pond knows every component intimately, and maintaining that continuity ensures the best long-term results. Learn more about our maintenance services.
